There really is such a thing as a Mermaid’s Purse. In certain oceans particular sharks, i.e. The Dog Shark or the Horn Shark give birth by attaching en-casements to seaweed. One such encasement is in the shape of a purse so thus the name Mermaid’s Purse. Occasionally you can find one attached to the seaweed when washed ashore. On your next stroll on the beach take the time to pull apart the seaweed you just might find another treasure of the sea. Great research study for students.
